Why Smurfit Kappa ?
Smurfit Kappa Group was one of the world’s leading producers of Paper Based Packaging Solutions. I had always wanted to complete my internship in one of the prime companies in the pulp and paper industry at an international level, Smurfit Kappa was therefore a great place for my traineeship. Moreover, I was extremely interested in the flow of recovered paper in the industry and also its processing. With operations in over 30 countries across Europe and Latin America and also mainly using recovered paper as raw material, Smurfit Kappa Group was certainly the best place to start.
What was the most rewarding aspect of Internship?
The most rewarding aspect of the internship at the Smurfit kappa Group is the familiarity that I have obtained with the international paper based packaging industry. Learning the dynamics of this industry from one of its world leaders was certainly a boon I was lucky to obtain. Most importantly, the colleagues in Smurfit Kappa were extremely helpful towards my goal of a comprehensive training. The internship involved several visits to recycling depots, paper and board mills based on recovered fiber and virgin fiber printing houses, corrugators, converters, waste management plants spread across the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, U.K and Sweden. By visiting these locations of Smurfit Kappa, I could imbibe the value and importance of the Recycling of Paper, which can be considered as the ‘Lifeline’ of the Smurfit Kappa Group, apart from its 38,000 wonderful employees.
What was your favourite aspect of the internship?
My favourite aspect of the internship at Smurfit Kappa was with Smurfit Kappa Kraftliner Pitea, Sweden. Being Europe’s largest Kraftliner mill, it is a perfect example of the process of papermaking from virgin and recovered fiber. The internship helped me to understand the scenario of the European paper based packaging industry and the recovered paper market. The internship was planned in a beautiful way, which gave me the chance to visit some the most important cities in Europe including London, Brussels, Amsterdam, Berlin, and Stockholm. The colleagues at Smurfit Kappa were extremely hospitable towards me. The experiences of this splendid internship would be forever etched in my memory.
