Working with Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), Edrington has committed to reducing emissions in its operations, across its supply chain and brands to become Net Zero by 2045. To deliver this ambitious carbon reduction strategy, Edrington partners with suppliers who can support them on this journey.
Smurfit Kappa, who has also had its emissions reduction targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), understands the need for sustainable packaging and works collaboratively with Edrington’s operation in Mexico.
Challenge 1 – Adjustable eCommerce Packaging
The challenge was to create a packaging solution for its new eCommerce channel, that would protect the fragile glass bottles, be quick and easy to assemble, and used no plastic film. The solution also needed to adapt to different product sizes, as stocking different packaging lines would be difficult due to a lack of warehouse space.
Our team of designers focused on a corrugated box which, when used in combination with a versatile paper-based insert, could accommodate ten different sized products. The paper-based insert simply wraps around the different sized bottles, facilitating a quick and easy packing process, and provides the necessary protection for these premium products across the supply chain.
The proposed solution simplified the whole packing and packaging inventory management process whilst keeping warehouse space needed to a minimum. The 100% paper-based and recyclable solution contained high-quality printed branding on the inside of the pack to create a premium unboxing experience.
Challenge 2 – Omni-Channel Packaging
For the launch of a special edition of The Macallan Home Collection, Edrington required a packaging solution that could be used across both its retail and eCommerce channels. The challenge was to develop a packaging solution for a bottle and booklet, that was structurally identical for both channels and tailor the graphics to represent the needs of the Macallan brand in both channels.
