CEO, Educational Company of Ireland
Twenty years in Smurfit Kappa has allowed me the privilege to work alongside some of the most talented, dedicated, customer-focussed, innovative, decent people that exist in business today. I am very proud to play a small part in the success of this world-class organisation.
Your career path with Smurfit Kappa:
I started on the Smurfit Kappa Graduate Management Trainee Programme in 1991, following this I took up the position of Marketing Manager with Smurfit Publishing and Design. I progressed to Executive Director Contract Publishing and Corporate Design. In 2000, I moved to The Educational Company of Ireland (Edco) as Sales and Marketing Manager, progressing to Operations Director in 2007, and then became CEO of Edco in 2008. The business is hugely exciting, challenging and dynamic.
What I am currently working on:
The educational publishing industry is changing nationally and internationally, with ICT (Information and Communication Technology) playing an increasingly important role. Managing the transition from print to digital is key, core to which is ensuring that we are prepared for the move to digital, but don’t jump too fast. It is also imperative that our content is interoperable across whatever platform/ device a student chooses to use. As well as continuing to publish high quality curriculum focussed resources for the Irish market, I am also investigating suitable international opportunities for Edco.
What has been the most rewarding experience at Smurfit Kappa?
There have been several. Highlights for me include:
My appointment as CEO of The Educational Company of Ireland and reporting directly into SKG Group CEO Gary Mc Gann
EdcoDigital winning the digital media award for best in e learning in 2010
Edco winning Smurfit Kappa Ireland Company of the Year in 2002 and again in 2005
Receiving the Sales Manager of the Year award in 1996
What advice would you give someone considering joining Smurfit Kappa?
Be prepared to work hard, be committed, challenged and dedicated to your role. In return, you get to work for a highly supportive, forward-thinking, ambitious and fair organisation.
