Proud sponsor of the Canal Swim in Hyltebruk

Kanalsimmet, or “The Canal Swim,” is an annual community open-water race held in Hyltebruk, Sweden. Though still relatively new, it has quickly become a cherished local tradition.

Supporting employee well-being and family-friendly activities is an important part of Smurfit Westrock’s commitment to the communities where it operates. This year, the Brännögård plant was once again proud to sponsor Kanalsimmet, bringing together employees, families, athletes and local residents for a memorable day of sport and community spirit.

The event was organized by Simon Jansson, a Brännögård employee and active member of the Hyltebruk Swimming Association. Participants take on a unique 2-kilometer course through the town’s canal system, swimming 1 kilometer upstream before returning 1 kilometer downstream to the finish line. The race welcomes both competitive and recreational swimmers.

The day began under bright sunshine and featured a ceremonial opening that included Sweden’s national anthem, performed by HR Manager Johanna Catoni and Design Engineer Li Olson.

Interest in Kanalsimmet continues to grow. Last year, 29 swimmers participated; this year, the event reached capacity with 50 participants traveling from across Sweden, ranging from elite athletes to recreational swimmers.

Smurfit Westrock was also represented in the competition by employee Joachim Vesterlund, who works on the corrugator at Brännögård and achieved an impressive sixth place in the men’s category.

The event was designed to be inclusive for everyone. While swimmers competed in the canal, spectators followed the race on foot along the banks, creating a vibrant atmosphere throughout the town. Smurfit Westrock served hot dogs and distributed dry bags as giveaways, well-suited to the day’s activities.

For a small community, Kanalsimmet has become a highlight of the year, attracting large crowds and strengthening local connections. The event also received broader recognition, including coverage from SVT News Halland that was later broadcast locally and nationally.

Smurfit Westrock is proud to support events like Kanalsimmet that promote health, well-being and community engagement while bringing people together.
