Maranguape's Happiness Square
In response to the rising violence and the challenges faced by unsupervised children in Maranguape, Brazil, Smurfit Kappa (Now Smurfit Westrock) initiated a community project aimed at providing safe public spaces.
Recognising the need for safe public spaces as a countermeasure to these problems, Smurfit Kappa, in partnership with the Municipality of Maranguape, sought to construct of a square in La Tangueira, a district near their Fortaleza corrugated packaging plant. This "Happiness Square" was developed on an abandoned parking lot and is intended to serve as a safe gathering place for children, families, and the broader community. Located just 1.5 km from the factory, the square directly benefits 12 families of Smurfit Kappa workers and approximately 3,000 neighbourhood residents.
The Municipality of Maranguape has committed to maintaining the square, ensuring its role as a lasting symbol of hope and community spirit.
During a visit to the site, Juan Guillermo Castaneda, Chair of the Smurfit Kappa Foundation, said, "Happiness Square is now a symbol of hope and joy, bringing people together and fostering a sense of community spirit."
This initiative is just one example of how Smurfit Kappa is dedicated to building stronger, more resilient communities.
