Smurfit Kappa announces new partnership with WWF™ to promote FSC® certified products

Smurfit Kappa Colombia has formed a new alliance with global wildlife protection charity World Wildlife Fund™ (WWF) to raise awareness of the need to source sustainably sourced forestry products.

The partnership promotes Smurfit Kappa’s Cartoprint® brand, an award-winning and accredited sustainable printing and writing paper, which is produced using renewable fibres from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC® ) certified forestry plantations.

The FSC® label is reserved for products sourced from sustainably managed forests. To qualify for the accreditation, producers must meet demanding environmental, social and economic requirements, verified by an independent third party.

Steven Stoffer, Smurfit Kappa Group Vice President of Development said: “This partnership empowers Cartoprint consumers across the  Americas region to make informed choices when purchasing paper-based products and supports the protection of the unique natural assets of the country.

“Sustainability is incredibly important to Smurfit Kappa. At present, 52% of Colombia is covered by natural forest; an area larger than Spain. This is an amazing figure, but this exceptional environment is under constant threat of deforestation.

“Our partnership in Colombia with WWF™ will help reduce this threat by encouraging consumers to select responsibly-sourced products.”

Last year Smurfit Kappa announced that 90% of its packaging is sold as certified by the FSC®, the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) and the Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI).
