Smurfit Kappa’s packaging expertise recognised with 11 Starpack awards

Smurfit Kappa has walked away with 11 awards for its innovative, sustainable packaging at the UK Starpack Awards.

Creative eCommerce and shelf-ready packaging solutions for a diverse range of products including gin, orchids, sausages and pizza received praise from the judging panel for their clever use of materials and innovative approach to the brief.

The packaging leader’s haul included two gold, four silver, three bronze and two special awards. The ‘Packaging Star of the Year’ award went to Smurfit Kappa Designer Paul Lowes for his ‘infectious energy’ in striving for the best solution when creating his ‘Shop in a Box’ product.

The other special award went to the ‘Wonky Veg’ box which came about after TV chef Jamie Oliver challenged Asda to make misshapen vegetables more attractive to consumers. Smurfit Kappa was able to draw on its expertise in creating packaging for fresh produce that is both recyclable and biodegradable. This attractive and sustainable box sold out in two days and won the ‘Greenstar Sustainability Award.’

Commenting about the win, Clive Bowers, CEO of Smurfit Kappa UK, said: “We are delighted and honoured to have won 11 Starpack awards. These are a tribute to our world-class designers who are passionate about delivering innovative packaging solutions each and every day.

“We work with our customers to come up with fit-for-purpose packaging that will deliver against a number of briefs including protecting the product during the supply chain to attracting consumer attention in store as part of our ShelfSmart service.”

The Starpack Awards recognise innovation in packaging design and technology and are in their 58th year.
