Smurfit Kappa supports Castro Limón Foundation

The packaging company made the opening and equipping of the Psycho-oncology area possible, thanks to the donation of $90,000.00 USD.

Today, representatives of Smurfit Kappa and members of the Castro-Limón Foundation inaugurated the new Psycho-oncology center in the Foundation´s Hospital in Tijuana, Mexico. This center includes two playrooms and a family therapy room for children and teenagers diagnosed with cancer. Here, they will offer free services to more than 250 local families – providing them with a professional and modern space in which they will have access to the latest advances in comprehensive and disciplinary treatments.

Thanks to Smurfit Kappa’s $90,000.00 USD donation, the Psycho-oncology center, which is located on the second floor of the institution, is open and equipped. This center represents an important milestone that benefits children and their families who live in Tijuana and Baja California.

“At Smurfit Kappa, we firmly believe in the importance of building a sustainable future in the communities and countries in which we operate," said Eduardo Rubio, Vice-president of Packaging in Mexico, during the opening. "We are pleased to have been able to contribute to the smiles of children, teenagers, and their families, who are treated each year in this hospital. There is nothing more important than family and, for the Smurfit Kappa team, you are a part of ours.”

The area includes two playrooms: one for children and another for teenagers, as well as a psycho-Oncological patient room and a family therapy room. It will be the place where children and teenagers can develop their cognitive, social and motor skills during their cancer treatment, to ensure a healthy development and help them in going back to their regular lives after the illness.

The Smurfit Kappa Group Foundation was created in 2011 to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life in communities where it has the privilege to operate. The main focus of the Foundation is to support health programs, basic care, nutrition and education for children and their families.

Roberto Encinas, President of the Castro-Limón Foundation Council and Roberto Castro, Founding President of the Castro-Limón Foundation, who attended the inauguration, thanked the company's initiative and highlighted the importance of the project: “The Castro-Limón Foundation, deeply appreciates Smurfit Kappa’s support for this noble cause and we thank you for involving all of the local team in this project, it meant more hearts for a childhood without cancer."

In Mexico and Baja California, the company has more than nine programs that promote health, education and sustainability.
