SUCCESS STORY

Smurfit Westrock creates Quality solution to drive down emissions for Nestlé

The Challenge
Quality Street, the iconic chocolate sweets from Nestlé, made a significant step in 2022 by switching to paper wrappers, preventing over 2 billion wrappers from ending up in landfills. Continuing its efforts to reduce virgin plastic, Nestlé teamed up with Smurfit Westrock to develop a trial paper-based tub for Quality Street this Christmas season.

The Approach
Our Better Planet Packaging experts worked closely with Nestlé to design a paper-based replacement that maintained the signature octagonal shape and held the same weight of chocolates. We focused on creating a standout design that not only looked appealing on shelves but also integrated easily into consumers' household recycling systems.

The Result
The innovative new paper-based solution will be sold alongside the traditional plastic version in select Tesco stores leading up to Christmas. Nestlé is breaking new ground as the first major manufacturer to trial a paper tub during the holiday season, catering to the increasing demand for sustainable packaging. Additionally, the redesign allows more boxes to fit on each pallet, which has the potential to significantly reduce CO2 emissions.
