SUCCESS STORY

Supporting Clasifruit to create moisture resistant packaging for Colombia's first export of peppers

The Challenge
Clasifruit SAS, is a Colombia company with extensive experience in agricultural production. To expand their portfolio, they ventured into the country's first export of peppers, which could be grown all year round. They needed a weather resistant packaging solution that would protect the peppers across the supply chain, taking into account the humidity and the significant volume needed for export.

Supply Smart
The Approach
Using our ‘SupplySmart’’ methodology and our unique design tools, we reviewed different box sizes factoring in the weight-to-volume ratio, the cardboard tray pallets used, and the size of the shipping containers. To address the humidity problem, we conducted a ‘Wet shear’ test in our laboratory to determine the adhesive capabilities and benefits of the glues used.
Supply Smart
The Result
Smurfit Kappa developed a double-wall corrugated box, using a specific glue to resist humidity, guaranteeing the quality of the product throughout the whole journey. The cleverly designed pack can be self-assembled, removing the need for tape or staples, and includes a specialised anchoring system that allows the products to be stacked 11 packs high, utilising an impressive 93.1% of the shipping container.
