Sustainable district heating solutions
Smurfit Kappa has a long tradition of benefiting the local community. Alongside supporting educational and charitable initiatives and creating jobs, we also look to how outcomes of the day-to-day business operations can be harnessed for the good of the community.
Two of our paper mills in Sweden and Austria are providing a renewable source of heat to the residents and businesses located in the surrounding areas.
Northern Sweden is subject to heavy snowfall in the winter months so a reliable heating system is vital. The Piteå paper mill in Sweden has been working with a local energy provider to provide heating for the local area for over 45 years. Over 3700 buildings in central Piteå including houses, businesses, the main pedestrian street and indoor baths are powered by the district heating system.
More recently, the Nettingsdorf paper mill launched a similar scheme which involves excess heat from the mill being used to provide heating for local homes, businesses and schools. It follows on from €134 million programme of investment at the mill.
Both the Piteå and Nettinsdorf heating schemes are an excellent example of how our circular business model can positively impact the day-to-day lives of the local community.
Smurfit Kappa's aim is to contribute to a world with reduced carbon emissions, supporting the concept of circularity in combating climate change. Learn more about our climate commitments.
