Field of Dreams Cork
The Smurfit Westrock team based in Cork, Ireland, recently hosted a special site visit, welcoming students from the Ready-to-Work class of Down Syndrome Cork’s Field of Dreams initiative.
The Field of Dreams program provides learning opportunities for adults with Down syndrome. It aims to enhance their independence and employability through tailored training and hands-on employment support. The positive effects are evident, with participants gaining increased opportunities for employment within their communities. Additionally, the program broadens community understanding and acceptance of individuals with Down syndrome.
During the visit, the students enjoyed a plant tour of Smurfit Westrock Cork, engaging with the team to learn about the production process.
A highlight of the visit was when Michael, a Smurfit Westrock Cork employee and proud graduate of the 2021 Ready-to-Work class, showcased his work on the factory floor. Michael has held an assembly role at Smurfit Westrock Cork for the past three years and is a valued team member. He was delighted to share his experiences with the student group and demonstrate his role in the assembly process.
The enthusiasm and positivity of the students made the visit truly special, leaving everyone involved in high spirits. The experience reinforced Smurfit Westrock’s commitment to inclusivity and support in the workplace.
