SUCCESS STORY

Helping a Colombian multinational replace plastic with a sustainable packaging solution

The Challenge
Grupo Corona, a Colombian multinational specialising in household products, exports more than 60% of its products. Due to having multiple brands, their manufacturing and logistics processes were complex, resulting in longer packing times and delayed sales. They wanted a sustainable solution to replace EPS, reduce material waste and offer product protection.

The Approach
Smurfit Kappa developed a 100% paper-based solution that unified pack sizes reducing the number of skus by 32% and eliminating any unnecessary packaging components.  We changed the orientation of the pack and incorporated a generic graphic design to unify the branding so that no substantial changes were needed to the packaging, only the labels.

The Result
This new sustainable solution delivered 43% cost savings for Corona by increasing the number of boxes per pallet, reducing material waste and optimising transport. In addition to replacing the EPS and styrofoam inserts, the new cardboard solution adjusts to products of different sizes, providing flexibility which resulted in 25% savings in the logistics process and a 33% reduction in required warehouse space.
