Smurfit Kappa invests in recycling operation in Scotland
Smurfit Kappa has made further investments at its paper and cardboard recycling operation in Glasgow with the installation of another large baler. This compliments the unit installed in 2016 bringing the investment in the site to approx. £1 million demonstrating Smurfit Kappa’s commitment to providing local businesses with a sustainable recycling solution.
The new baler will enable the site to bale even more cardboard and paper for onward shipment to its two UK paper mills in Birmingham and Kent which both operate on 100% recovered card and paper material. The recycled paper is then distributed within its 32 packaging plants throughout the UK to be used in the UK packaging supply chain.
Ian Ledson, General Manager comments “Smurfit Kappa continues to strengthen the recycling capabilities at its Scottish operation with further significant investment planned in 2021. We have recovered close to 70,000 tonnes of cardboard and paper over the last 12 months from businesses and local authorities throughout Scotland and our plans will enable us to increase this further offering our suppliers UK based recycling” .
