ALTERNATIVE TO PLASTIC PUNNETS

By switching from plastic to paper-based punnets we helped a Portuguese fig supplier improve its brand image and sales

The Challenge
Portuguese Fig suppliers were using plastic punnets to pack Indian figs and ship them to store where they were placed in plastic crates at the point of sale. They wanted to improve brand image and were looking for a more environmentally friendly paper-based solution to both box the figs and display.

The Solution
Smurfit Kappa worked with the customer to develop a shelf-ready corrugated box to hold the figs and a corrugated tray to allow easy display in store. The new packaging is easy to assemble with an authentic rustic feel with eye-catching branding.

The new 100% recyclable paper-based solution has been extremely successful and has led to a direct increase in sales. The customer was so impressed that they asked whether they could use the packaging exclusively.
