This year I am proud to celebrate 20 years with the Smurfit Kappa Group. I can summarise my 20 year’ experience, since joining the group in 1991 on the graduate programme, as very positive. I have been provided with continuous challenges over the years, great support, coaching and training which have enabled me to evolve professionally.
Why did I join Smurfit Kappa?
While studying Economics in Dublin (UCD) my objective was to join a best in class multinational within which I could develop a long term career. The Smurfit Kappa Group (at that time the Jefferson Smurfit Group) was one of Ireland’s leading companies and hence on the top of my target list.
What does one working week look like?
My working week involves a wide range of interesting challenges. I have a quarterly meeting with the Sales Directors of all sites, a monthly meeting with my team, monthly reviews with our CEO and ExCom, meetings with our largest clients together with the Key Account Managers, regular meetings with collegues from our Pan European Sales teams and I am involved in many projects related to driving innovation within our organisation, projects for key retailers which are mainly focused on Shelf Ready Packaging challenges or convincing retailers to move from Plastic RPC’s to corrugated trays for their Fruit and Veg product ranges.
No week is the same for me and this is one of the things I most appreciate about my experience so far in Smurfit Kappa. Whenever I have a calm moment I reflect on what “new” ideas we could work on to bring positive change and better results to the division. Coaching and supporting each member of my team and ensuring that they continuously evolve professionally is an ongoing task and one that I very much enjoy.
What advice would you give someone considering joining Smurfit Kappa?
On entering the Smurfit Kappa Group – “A Great Company” – it is very important to have an open mind and to be willing to learn about all of the key areas of the business before aspiring to move up within the organisation. It is this learning base that will stand to you later on as you evolve within the company. Smurfit Kappa encourages an entreprenural sprit and management will always welcome somebody who has continuous drive to bring ideas to the table which, if implemented, can benefit the business. However of course not all ideas will be taken on board and hence persistence and drive are key. A positive attitude / approach will certainly help any person joining the company to develop good relationships with colleagues and managers. We have a fantastic team of people within the group and it is very easy to integrate quickly at all levels. One’s capacity to work as part of a team is key, and if you move into a European Role communication skills even more important.
