Supply chain strategy

We work closely with our customers to achieve the most sustainable packaging solutions.

Working innovatively together with customers on packaging design and supply chain optimization involves two main sustainability aspects:

Sustainable origin of the packaging and collective design

We give customers a credible guarantee that the packaging supplied is produced in the most sustainable way, using materials form sustainable sources and utilizing the collective design skills of our global team of designers.

Optimizing our customers' supply chain

We also focus on how our packaging can minimize the total sustainability impact per unit of customer product delivered to the consumer. According to INCPEN, the energy component and hence the CO2 impact of packaging products is less than 5% in a typical customer’s supply chain.

The packaging related positive indirect impact (less damage/destruction of the packed product, optimised logistics, less waste, disposal, etc.) is much more significant for the sustainability of a customer’s supply chain.

For many customers we carry out evaluations with the help of the Smurfit Kappa web-based suite of design software, Innotools, seeking to optimize the direct and indirect impact of our packaging on sustainability through the entire supply chain of our customers.

Our virgin and recycled paper mills are certified in different areas such as quality and environmental management systems (ISO) and chain of custody (FSC and PEFC).

We also have management system certificates for forestry and wood sourcing.
