Paper turned sheet

This solution was a first for the industry and customers wanted the new paper immediately

The importance of paper

As an integrated company, innovation is found consistently across our whole organisation and especially so in our papermaking units, which constantly support and optimise their products and processes.

The challenge

When printing, the higher the calibre of the paper, the higher the quality of print that can be achieved. White top kraft is the premium uncoated paper for printing. At our virgin kraft mill in Pitea, Sweden, after a rebuild of our paper machine’s press section, our customers highlighted a problem concerning issues with printability. A full-scale analysis was quickly commissioned to resolve the issue.

“Paper is the starting point of our packaging; in functional terms the paper dictates strength and the printability of the pack –this impacts the performance and the appearance of the pack,”
Lars Henriksson, Vice President of Product Development, Smurfit Kappa Paper

Innovation turned upside down

A range of solutions were identified, and the team at Pitea decided on one that broke the rules of conventional paper making; effectively turning the current production process upside down. The result was that the paper’s surface improved significantly, giving a superior surface for print.

Market reaction

“This innovation gave us market leadership and earned us a reputation with customers who required consistently reliable quality for printing. Many competitors have now implemented the same processes on their press sections,"
Ralf Durholz, Project Manager at Pitea

This solution was a first for the industry and results from trials were so successful, with perfect print coverage and no missing dots, that customers who had taken part wanted the new paper immediately.
