CEO, Smurfit Kappa Ireland

1978 - 1991
1991 - 1998
1998 - 2001
2001 - Present
Joined the Group in 1978 on a fixed term contract working in the Process & Quality Control Department of Smurfit Paper Mills, Dublin. During this period I was offered a role in the mill that made me responsible for Production Planning, Transport and Purchasing and in 1987 I became Production Manager of the Mill.  In 1991 I became General Manager of the Paper Mill and in 1996 management of Smurfit Recycling was merged with my existing role at the Mill. This was a time of considerable change within Irish Recycling and in particular Volume Recovery. My role in the Smurfit Group facilitated my involvement in a number of national organisations. In 1998 my role expanded to encompass responsibility for our Corrugated Operations in Cork. This consisted of an integrated corrugating plant and sheet plant. While challenging at the time this was a great opportunity to develop my knowledge of this side of the business and, in effect, closed the circle for me in the Smurfit Group packaging manufacturing cycle.  In 2001 the management of the Irish Packaging Operations were restructured from two Divisions to one and I became CEO. While always challenging due to market dynamics and continual internal efficiency focus, my role offers great diversity across the full spectrum of business issues. As a member of our European Executive Committee, I benefit from involvement in business experiences across our European operations.
