Peter.pngTechnical Director, Ireland

Working for Smurfit Kappa there is always something new and challenging to work on. Currently along with my technical responsibility for Ireland, I am leading a Group wide project for our Corrugated Division.

Why did I join Smurfit Kappa?

I joined via the Graduate scheme as it offered a unique opportunity to sample different job functions in various businesses across Ireland, there was also an opportunity to travel abroad. Compared to other options at the time, this program was much more varied and flexible and presented the chance to quickly work in a “real life” environment.

My career path with the Company

Following my time on the graduate programme, I moved to Italy and got the chance to work through several levels of quality and production management, before being appointed as Technical Manager for the country. I then returned to Ireland in a similar role only to move again to Italy 3 years later, this time as General Manager of a large site. Following this I returned once more to Ireland with technical responsibility for both Ireland and the UK. This role evolved into a more direct Operations role in Ireland and I am now Technical Director of Ireland, however with an additional Group role working for Global Sourcing.

What has been the most rewarding experience at Smurfit Kappa?

I am lucky to say that I have had many rewarding experiences while working for the company. It is difficult to pin point one in particular, however, probably consider my move to Italy as a very valuable moment in my career both professionally and personally. It gave me new opportunities and also forced me to integrate into a different culture and language society which on reflection played a very important part in building my character and attitude today.

What advice would you give someone considering joining Smurfit Kappa?

This is a great company to work for, there is a very open culture throughout the organisation and there are definitely good opportunities for someone joining the company at whatever entry level. You should be ready for a bit of hard work, however, when the results come I think you can be sure that they will be appreciated.
