Although Czech Republic has the highest beer consumption per capita in the world, wine is increasing in popularity. Between 2008 and 2012, wine consumption increased at an annual rate of 12.4 % per capita, driven mostly by young urban professionals. Local consumers favour specialist wine shops for purchasing draught or kegged wine from the tap.
However, Czech wines´ face a threat from cheaper wines imported from abroad and illegal practices such as counterfeiting and adulterating. It is common knowledge that some wine shops deceive consumers in terms of the origins and quality of the wine they offer. To regain trust of consumers in Czech wines, increase the quality of consumed wine and avoid tax dodges, the Ministry of Agriculture is preparing stricter supervision and penalties.
According to Monika Plaskota, Smurfit Kappa Bag-in-Box Sales Manager, “Draught wine is an economical solution for wine but with the new legal situation, Bag-in-Box is an ideal solution. Convenient, eco-friendly and cost saving, the BiB can also ensure product identification and traceability thanks to is strict food safety regulations.”
