Tips for job applicants

​ 1. Is it the right role for you?

The most important tip we can offer to begin with is: do your research. Find out all that you can about the role and the company before you apply. It is up to you to establish from the outset what it is you want from your next role and employer. It is also very important that you understand from the beginning what we are looking for in a candidate.

2. Check your spelling and grammar:

To minimise your chances of error:

  • Use short sentences
  • Edit your work a number of times
  • Use your computer’s word-count facility to make sure you keep to the correct number of words
  • Print your application off, read through it carefully and show it to someone else

3. Always answer the question you are being asked:

Applicants often do not answer every aspect of every question and are therefore not covering the required content. To avoid this, read each question carefully.

Take the following question as an example:

Tell us about a time when you have worked as a member of a team. Describe your personal contribution, how you faced any problems that arose and what was the outcome.

We are looking for four things:

  • A specific example of when you have worked in a team
  • Your personal contribution
  • How you dealt with any problems
  • The outcome

4. Highlight your experience – why are you perfect for the job?

Make sure to outline fully your work experience to date. We greatly value work experience because it clearly demonstrates your skills and motivation.

  • Shows how your skills are easily transferable
  • It delivers examples of experience of the workplace
  • We equally value examples of voluntary experience (work placement, internships) so please include these also

5. Have plenty of examples:

In addition to highlighting your employment history and experience, it is important to promote your skills effectively – this is best achieved through the use of specific examples.
