The broad structure of the Company supports development but it remains the role of the individual to maximise this to his or her benefit.
Why did I join Smurfit Kappa?
My father and grandfather worked in the Company and it was always a very strong brand in Ireland when I was growing up. I was also attracted by the tangible nature of the business and the scope of its interests.
My career path with the company:
From the Smurfit Kappa Graduate Management Trainee Programme I worked in shift operational positions in Ireland for 5 years. I transferred to the UK for four years as Operations Manager of a corrugated plant and returned to work as PA to the Chairman & CEO in 2001. In 2003 I took up the position of General Manager of Killeen Corrugated and oversaw the merger of this operation with Smurfit Kappa Dublin in 2006. In 2007 I was appointed General Manager of Smurfit Kappa Dublin.
As a General Manager the key role is to oversee the development of the business. On a strategic level this relates to the structure of the management team, the sales strategy and the capital requirements to improve efficiencies. On a daily level it is to ensure that we are all pulling in the right direction and that we are maximising our performance on a monthly basis.
What does the future hold?
While the last number of years has been very challenging, in Ireland in particular, they have also been very rewarding. There has been a strong sense of achievement amongst all employees of the business that they have contributed to the improvements that have been made. The ability to retain and develop this awareness will be crucial if we are to survive and prosper as a business unit for the next five years.
What advice would you give someone considering joining Smurfit Kappa?
Unlike third level education your experiences in Smurfit Kappa will not always be presented in an academic or even logical manner.
