We have been switching from fossil fuel to renewable energy where possible and economically feasible.

A few examples are:

  • Sweden – Our Piteå paper mill installed a biomass boiler in 2007
  • Colombia – Cali mill installed a new black liquor boiler in August 2009
  • France - Cellulose du Pin commissioned a biomass boiler in August 2010

Production of electricity through a Combined Heat & Power (CHP) boiler, which is the most efficient way for production of electricity, has steadily increased over the last years. Just in 2010, the co-generation ratio for the usage of electricity increased in Europe by 4% for all our operations.

Latin America

In Latin America, the increase in 2010 was even higher as the rate of self-produced electricity increased by 12% resulting from the new recovery boiler in Cali (Colombia), with its additional capacity for electricity generation. This boiler has been operating since 2009.

We strive to decrease our fossil CO₂emissions where possible. We endorse the emission reduction targets defined in the EU ETS Directive post 2012.
