Smurfit Kappa Benelux challenges international students

Smurfit Kappa Benelux challenges international students to design a sustainable, safe and optimum solution to pack e-commerce products

In 2011, Smurfit Kappa Benelux organized a creativity session with undergraduate students from the Industrial Design Engineering (IDE) in collaboration with the University College West Flanders (HOWEST). Following this session, Smurfit Kappa Benelux now challenges international students to come up with an ideal e-commerce packaging solution.

BLX_Challenge_02.jpgFor the sixth time University College West Flanders organizes the Intensive Program, an international project where students from eight European design schools work with IDE students of University College West Flanders to spend two full weeks to look for an innovative solution to a specific question from the industry. The selected projects are Imec, De Lijn, Elit, Supa Cream Milk en GeoSound and Smurfit Kappa Benelux.

From 13 until 24 February, three or four teams of five students from different nationality and discipline work on the assigned projects. This approach will result in independent innovative solutions for each case. Six companies are selected by HOWEST. This years’ theme is ‘green design through a multi-coloured approach’.

Smurfit Kappa Benelux asks students to design a sustainable, secure and optimized e-commerce cardboard packaging solution that can also be used as a returnable packaging. More and more companies sell their services and products online and consumers increasingly prefer this ordering method. This affects the supply chain and the packaging requirements. The challenge for the students is to minimize the amount of used (filling) material, but design in such a way that the product is still optimum protected.
