Corrugated houses used as emergency shelters

Smurfit Kappa Benelux supports initiative to provide successfully tested corrugated based houses as emergency shelters

Smurfit Kappa Benelux sponsors the Lions Europe Forum 2011 and proudly supports the initiative of the Calamatic Foundation to provide corrugated-based emergency shelters to aid the people in disaster areas.

Successful tests were done in countries like Pakistan and Panama. The shelter can be outfitted with solar panels and can be wired for utilities. It has an internal supporting structure, is water and fire resistant and UV-proof.

The houses are designed to support victims after a disaster as a mid-term shelter, rather than as a first response.

At the Forum, held in Maastricht, Netherlands, many visitors from different European countries had the opportunity to take a close look at the corrugated prototype shelter. All visitors reacted enthusiastically to the design of the corrugated shelter and were charmed by our positive story

The Lions Club Council chairman, Jan Troost, was very pleased with the sponsorship of Smurfit Kappa Benelux and said he believes in a profound partnership. “The first bridge has been built between the different partners; now it is time to think of the next steps to take to further develop this excellent project and to contribute to improve the lives of the world's poorest communities.”

Smurfit Kappa Benelux regards corporate social responsibility as part of a continuing process of building long-term value. Chris Wiegers, Account Manager at Smurfit Kappa Twincorr, commented “we are very much engaged to take part in constructing a world of greater solidarity.”
