Smurfit Kappa receives nine nominations for the PPI awards
Smurfit Kappa’s commitment to sustainability evident in PPI nominations
Smurfit Kappa, one of the world’s largest integrated manufacturers of paper-based packaging products with operations in Europe and the Americas, has received nine nominations for awards across six categories for the 2013 Pulp & Paper International (‘PPI’) Awards. Multiple nominations in more than one category reinforce the Group’s position as a leading player in the global paper-based packaging sector.

Launched in 2009, the PPI Awards are the only global awards dedicated to recognizing the achievements of companies, mills and individuals in the pulp and paper sector. The 2013 winners will be announced in December.

Award | Environmental Strategy of the Year - Converting Division Mexico
Smurfit Kappa Mexico developed a comprehensive environmental and sustainability program which has led to lower environmental impacts and a focus on people and social benefits for the community.
Award | Environmental Strategy of the Year – Piteå (Sweden)
Smurfit Kappa Kraftliner Piteå is nominated for their strategy to be “best in class”. Piteå produces almost fossil CO2 free kraftliner which makes their product a sustainable choice.
Award | Bio Strategy of the Year - Roermond (the Netherlands)
Smurfit Kappa Roermond developed a unique process to convert its combustible rejects into approximately 15,000 tonnes of high calorific (bio) fuel pellets (Rofire®), saving approximately 20,000 tonnes of fossil CO2 emissions annually.
Award | Bio Strategy of the Year – Piteå (Sweden)
Smurfit Kappa Kraftliner Piteå is a frontrunner in the usage of biomass. Throughout the years the mill has been closely involved in green-tech research and Piteå also developed a process to run its lime kilns with saw dust only, which is a unique process.
Award | Water Efficiency Award – Wrexen (Germany)
Smurfit Kappa Wrexen is nominated for closing the mill process water cycle in a sustainable and most efficient way by not only focusing on pure water consumption savings, but also on many other operational and process aspects.
Award | Advances in Innovation in Sustainable Packaging – Ice cream Thiriet (France)
Smurfit Kappa’s packaging for the ice-cream Thiriet was developed together with the customer, and meets the stringent requirements of the food industry. This new mono-material pack successfully replaces multiple material packaging. The new solution is easier to recycle and has a lower carbon footprint compared to the previous solution.
Award | Advances in Innovation in Sustainable Packaging – Reusable Flowerbox (the Netherlands)
Smurfit Kappa’s Flowerbox TwindiGo is the answer to the industry’s request for a packaging solution that requires less storage space, is strong and robust and can be easily erected. This pack can be re-used and reduces the CO2 footprint in transportation.
