Smurfit Kappa releases 2010 Sustainable Development Report

Smurfit Kappa Group plc (‘SKG’ or the ‘Group’), one of the world’s largest integrated manufacturers of paper-based packaging products with operations in Europe and Latin America, announces the publication of its annual Sustainable Development Report for the year 2010.

The report details the Group’s continuing efforts to enhance its sustainable development practices and specifically details SKG’s environmental, social and economic activities related to sustainability.

Gary McGann, Group Chief Executive Officer commented: “We are pleased to announce the publication of our Sustainable Development Report for 2010. We are firmly committed to long-term sustainable work practices and set out, within our report, a range of programmes to progressively deliver on that objective. These include programmes such as the sustainable origin of fibre and a significant reduction of CO2 emissions within our mill system.”

He added: “Our customers have also recognised our commitment to sustainability. Market-leading companies such as Unilever and Coca-Cola awarded the Group for its sustainability practices.”

Mr McGann concluded: We would like to record our appreciation for our 38000 employees across the Group’s 332 facilities who contribute each and every day towards maintaining Smurfit Kappa Group’s position as the leading paper-based packaging company in the world and who recognise the importance of sustainable working practices.”

SKG commits to Long Term Sustainability Objectives

SKG has committed to long-term sustainability objectives in areas such as:

  • Sustainable origin of fibres and certification of products (2015)
  • Significant reduction of relative CO2 emissions from fossil fuels in global paper & board mill system (2020)
  • Further relative reductions in organic content (COD) discharged in our process water (2020).

Customer’s recognition for focus on sustainability

Increasingly customers show recognition for the Group’s efforts in the area of sustainability:

  • Unilever awarded SKG with their global ‘Winning through Sustainability’ supplier Award 2010.
  • Coca-Cola Enterprises recognised the Group for its innovative processes and gave SKG their ‘Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Supplier’ award for 2010.

Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) reporting advanced to A+ level

SKG has advanced its reporting level according to the GRI to level A+ from previous year’s level B+. Like last year external assurance was carried out on a number of key performance indicators included in the Report. This highlights a commitment to make the report on activities as transparent as possible.

Overview of activities in 2010

  • Chain of Custody certification (FSC/PEFC) of almost all paper & board operations in Europe (completed January 2011)
  • Significant progress in the certification of packaging manufacturing operations
  • Material reduction of fossil CO2 emission per tonne of product produced
  • Significant decreased water intake in Latin America per tonne of product produced
  • Major decrease in Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) discharge per tonne of product in Europe over the 2005 – 2010 period
  • Progress on bringing operations under environmental management systems in Latin America
  • Active involvement by individual SKG operations in  (social) local community activities.
