As a graduate, I knew that if I proved my worth I could fast-track my career. That is exactly what happened. I don’t think there are many graduate schemes that offer this kind of development opportunity.
Why Smurfit Kappa?
I attended a graduate fair in Manchester and after speaking to the company’s UK Graduate Development Officer, I realised this was a unique opportunity for me to become an integral part of a company that is an industry leader.
Highlights of the Graduate Scheme:
The most rewarding thing for me was to see the impact that graduates can make on the business, while at the same time learning and developing. I could see first hand the added value my contribution was making to the business and also see the satisfaction of the operators who were working under the procedures I had put in place.
My career development:
Within four years of working for the company I have developed from a graduate trainee, to transport manager, and I am currently a production manager at the Witney site. There are three production leaders, a transport manager and three dispatch leaders working with me. I enjoy working for a major UK manufacturing plant and being given a degree of freedom to direct the operation using my own management style. It’s particularly pleasing to see the financial, staffing and general improvements gained from our work.
My aim is to work my way up through the Smurfit Kappa management hierarchy to senior level and to continue to personally develop. Although I have finished the graduate scheme, there is still a development structure to help me reach my personal and professional goals.
