Smurfit Kappa Lurgan invest in Energy Efficiency through installation of New Boiler Unit.
Between February 2009 and Summer 2011 Smurfit Kappa Lurgan had only one boiler on site. This was an aged piece of machinery and had been onsite for 16 years. Due to the age profile of the machine and improvements in technology both in terms of the boiler and other machinery in the Lurgan facility over the last two decades the machine had become seriously inefficient and in 2010 failed its NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) test and had to be shut down for a period of time for repair work to be completed.
Taking this on board the management at Smurfit Kappa Lurgan began to investigate the potential to install a new Boiler machine onsite that would increase efficiencies and result in cost savings. Based on this in 2011 Smurfit Kappa Lurgan installed a new Boiler that due to increased energy efficiency will save an estimated €25,000 annually through reduced energy costs and is a far more sustainable solution compared to what was in place previously. A summary of the enhanced energy efficiency features are as follows:
1. Extremely high insulated casing – far superior to the older boiler at keeping heat in.
2. New boiler is fitted with turbulators which create a restriction on the flue gas exit to create more heat.
3. Through use of the Baviera system, it allows for the return of high pressure, high quality condensate directly into the boiler.
