Smurfit Kappa Dublin install 'smart' Lighting to improve energy efficiency and reduce overall consumption.
The previous Smurfit Kappa Dublin lighting system was manually controlled and remained on 24hr per day, 5 days per week with certain areas switched off at weekends.
Initiating a Lighting Upgrade Project and implementing this new lighting system; which incorporates intelligent daylight & occupancy controls on each individual unit is providing energy savings of up to 80%.
Lighting Project Scope
The challenge for this project was to improve the overall energy performance of the Smurfit Kappa Dublin facility. Mark Clynch (Engineering Manager) identified that by installing best in class energy efficient lighting and a comprehensive energy monitoring and targeting system, substantial energy reduction could be achieved.
The lighting project is now complete & will deliver the following projected cost reduction for Smurfit Kappa Dublin:
Reduction in annual energy consumption by 630,000kWh
Reduction in annual CO2 Emissions by 270,000kg
Reduction in annual energy costs by €60,000
The lighting project has increased light levels and the automated lighting controls have also contributed to raising energy awareness on site. The energy monitoring system will be used to identify trends and highlight anomalies so that unnecessary energy use can be eliminated, but the system will also be used to help motivate and encourage staff to optimise the energy performance of the facility.
New technologies used by Smurfit Kappa Dublin follow the new benchmark register of best in class energy efficiency products (Triple E – Excellence in Energy Efficiency). Procuring against this register provides Smurfit Kappa with the assurance that we are purchasing products that are best in class in terms of efficiency standards.
Energy Metering Project Scope
The Energy Monitoring & Targeting System will provide precise demand & consumption data not only for electricity but for gas, water, & steam. This will enable energy cost centres to be created and very accurate energy performance indicators to be generated. It is anticipated that a minimum of 5% energy savings can be achieved through a co-ordinated energy monitoring & management programme.
Potential Group Implementation
Any manufacturing facility serious about ensuring that sustainability forms a core part of their business strategy could replicate the energy efficient lighting retrofit and energy monitoring projects within their facility.
It is anticipated that on completion of the Energy Monitoring & Targeting System project and following verification of the energy and cost savings directly attributed to this project; that similar projects can be implemented across the Smurfit Kappa portfolio of sites in Ireland, Europe and further afield.
