CEO, Educational Company of Ireland
Twenty five years in Smurfit Kappa has allowed me the privilege to work alongside some of the most talented, dedicated, customer-focussed, innovative, decent people that exist in business today. I am very proud to play a small part in the success of this world-class organisation.
Your career path with Smurfit Kappa:
I started on the Graduate scheme in 1991, when I left the Graduate scheme, I took up the position of Marketing Manager with Smurfit Publishing and Design. I progressed to Executive Director Contract Publishing and Corporate Design. In 2000, I moved to The Educational Company of Ireland (Edco) as Sales and Marketing Manager, progressing to Operations Director in 2007, and then became CEO of Edco in 2008. The business is hugely exciting, challenging and dynamic.
What I am currently working on:
The educational publishing industry is changing nationally and internationally, with digital content playing an increasingly important role, but contrary to earlier beliefs the demand is for "blended" learning as opposed to just print or digital. The Junior Cycle programme is also undergoing a huge shake-up, and that bring both opportunities and threats for Edco. Another trending area is that of STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology and Maths) and the need to attract Graduates into these areas, and then integrate them into the workforce. As well as continuing to publish high quality curriculum focused resources for the Irish market, we have also signed some international licensing deals for our content.
What has been the most rewarding experience at Smurfit Kappa?
There have been several. Highlights for me include:
My appointment as CEO of The Educational Company of Ireland
Edco winning Smurfit Kappa Ireland Company of the Year in 2002 and again in 2005
Being appointed to the Supervisory board for Smurfit Kappa Germany in 2015
Taking part in the Insead Executive leadership programme throughout 2016 and 2017
What advice would you give someone considering joining Smurfit Kappa?
Be prepared to work hard, be committed, challenged and dedicated to your role. In return, you get to work for a highly supportive, forward-thinking, ambitious and fair organisation.
