Release of 2011 Sustainable Development Report

Smurfit Kappa Group plc (‘Smurfit Kappa’ or the ‘Group’), one of the world’s largest integrated manufacturers of paper-based packaging products with operations in Europe and Latin America, announces the publication of its fifth annual Sustainable Development Report for 2011.

The report details Smurfit Kappa’s vision and its ongoing activities in the important area of sustainability. The report demonstrates the Group’s commitment to the supply of sustainable paper-based packaging solutions and outlines its approach to sustainability in the key areas of Environment, Society and Business.

Once again, Smurfit Kappa has successfully shown that sustainability is entirely compatible with delivering profitable growth. At a time when economic conditions are challenging, we see sustainability as a key differentiating factor in the market. In particular, we continue to make progress on our Chain of Custody target for 2015, which will guarantee that all the paper and packaging we produce originates from reliable sources. Smurfit Kappa is committed to achieving all of its sustainability objectives in order to continue to build a sustainable and responsible business which serves our customers and builds value for all stakeholders.”

2011 Sustainable Development Report | Highlights

Chain of Custody Certification

  • Since the first quarter of 2011, 100% of Smurfit Kappa’s paper mill system in Europe is FSC and/or PEFC certified.
  • In the last quarter of 2011, Smurfit Kappa’s three Mexican paper mills successfully passed their audit for certification according to the FSC scheme and received their certificates in early 2012.
  • In 2011, considerable progress was made in the certification process of Smurfit Kappa’s packaging manufacturing operations both in Europe and in Latin America.In total 44% of these operations are now certified.

CO2 Reduction & COD Water Discharges

  • The Group reduced its year-on-year direct and indirect fossil CO2 emissions by 2.9%.
  • Investments were completed in a number of our paper mills in 2011 and early 2012 that will lead to significant CO2 emission reductions at those mills.
  • Construction of a new water treatment plant in Smurfit Kappa’s paper mill in Bernal in Argentina was completed in 2011 and commissioned in early 2012.

Labour Relations

  • The agreement with the Group’s European Works Council was renewed and is valid for another four years.

Sustainable Packaging

  • The scope of Paper To BoxTM, a unique Smurfit Kappa tool to predict packaging performance, was extended in 2011 to include environmental parameters. As a result, the environmental impact of each packaging solution can now be assessed instantly.

Sustainability Awards

  • In Europe the Group introduced a Sustainability Awards competition for sustainable product designs, process and supply chain improvements, and local community involvement initiatives. The first Awards event took place in March 2012.
