Performance Packaging is Smurfit Kappa’s unique method of selecting and creating the most suitable board composition to meet our customer’s packaging needs. The reason for introducing and implementing Performance Packaging on a global scale is two-fold: we want to reduce the amount of non-functional raw material and as a result develop sustainable packaging portfolios using all the structural possibilities of corrugated board.
Corrugated board consists of at least three paper layers: two outer liners and the fluting paper that is used to create the flute between these liners. Corrugated board is a structure that can be optimised in two ways - the design of the board can be reviewed as well as the paper that is used to construct the board. Ultimately, it comes down to choosing the best board calliper, the ideal combination of liner papers, the optimal fluting for the packaging along with liners with optimal properties based on the supply chain.
Smurfit Kappa has made great efforts in optimising board in both the design as well as in the paper used. We have used the latest science, including computer simulation and extensive lab and field research, to design optimal board grades. This knowledge is shared worldwide through our unique InnoTools PackExpert and Paper to Box, making our expertise available to our customers on a global scale.
We have an extensive portfolio of 21 different flute designs to ensure that we can always offer the most suitable design for our customer’s packaging. However, we consider Performance Packaging a never-ending process and we continue to test and develop our corrugated board. As a result, we have recently added a new design, the S-flute, to our extensive portfolio.
