Our Development Centre in the Netherlands provides state-of-the-art facilities allowing us to test and evaluate every part of the packaging lifecycle.
We aim to provide our customers with sustainable packaging solutions by:
Minimising the direct environmental impact. We achieve this by optimising packaging through design and innovation.
Minimising the indirect environmental impact. We achieve this by optimising packaging performance across the entire supply chain.
Unique to Smurfit Kappa, we have developed a suite of programmes called ‘InnoTools’. To help us create sustainable packaging solutions, we employ two of the InnoTool programmes:
Pack Expert: Calculates the stresses and loads that packaging will experience in your supply chain and calculates the optimum strength of the board required. This unique data is then used to create logistical efficiencies, generating savings as well as reducing the environmental impact of your supply chain.
Paper to Box: Selects the most suitable grades, mixes of paper and flute combinations necessary to create the correct corrugated board. The results not only guarantee a cost-effective and fit-for-purpose pack, but, for every design, it also provides information on:
Calculation of the carbon footprint
Content of recycled and/or virgin fibres
Amount of pre- and post-consumer waste
These programmes are based on scientific knowledge of how packaging behaves physically in the supply chain, achieved through analysing over 15 million packages each year.
