Smurfit Kappa has won first prize in the Scanstar packaging awards for its customised transport packaging designed for NIBE Energy Systems, the largest manufacturer of domestic heating products in the Nordic European countries.
Scanstar is arranged by the Scandinavian Packaging Association (SPA), a coordinating body for the five Nordic countries’ national packaging organisations.
The task was to create packaging for a compressor, designed so that it can remain upright when transported. A cone-shaped box, developed by design engineer Ingvar Persson at Smurfit Kappa in Eslöv, Sweden, was the perfect solution.
The jury summed up the winning product’s benefits: ”This solution eliminates damage to the compressor by effectively protecting its highly sensitive top section. The conical shape also prevents the product from being handled upside down during transport and storage. The packaging is made of 100 % sustainable material.”
This clever design already won Smurfit Kappa’s Innovation Award earlier this year. Winning a Scanstar award means this packaging will now be entered in to the Global Worldstar Packaging Competition in November. The Scanstar award was presented at Scanpack on the 24th of October .
