Corporate Communications Coordinator

My work placement with Smurfit Kappa Group gave me the chance to undertake an exciting new project for the company, with a significant degree of personal responsibility.

Why Smurfit Kappa?

I applied for the Farmleigh Fellowship programme and selected education as one of the areas I was interested in working in. Smurfit Kappa  is a sponsor of this Programme. I was selected to work for Edco, a subsidiary company, and subsequently spent almost a year in Singapore and Malaysia carrying out market research.

What was your favorite aspect of your placement?

The experience of living and working in Singapore, along with the fact that what I achieved during my placement had the potential to make a big difference to the company.

What were your professional and personal goals?

My aim was to work in an environment in which I felt challenged and was constantly learning. I enjoy work which is results driven and stimulating, and in which I can contribute my own ideas and be creative. This is exactly what I have experienced in my time with Smurfit Kappa, from starting out with Edco to working in the company's communications department at headquarters in Dublin.

What advice would you give other students, looking for placements with Smurfit Kappa?

Be yourself. Everyone knows that you have to work hard and be dedicated, and of course this applies to Smurfit Kappa. What I found during my time with Edco and Smurfit Kappa Group is that being genuine is appreciated. It’s important to display your ability to think outside the box, and to have good organisational skills. Integrity and honesty are key, and having these combined with dedication, hard work and natural curiosity is extremely valuable.
