At Smurfit Kappa SSK we are looking beyond environmental compliance and constantly improving our process and the mill performance.
Our product is manufactured 100% from recovered fibre and is 100% recyclable. All paper and cardboard collected on behalf of Birmingham City Council is recycled in our Mill in Nechells. Locality of this process results in drop in miles the recovered fibre is travelling and therefore contributes to overall carbon footprint reductions.
Mill energy efficiency programme
We have implemented and are constantly developing a programme to reduce our carbon emissions. All energy used in the process in generated by an on-site CHP (Combined Heat and Power) Plant. Additionally bio-gas generated as part of our process water treatment plant is used as a fuel in our boilers. We are actively working with our employees and suppliers on constant improvement of our energy performance.
We recycle process water several times by circulation before is discharged back to sewer. In 2009 we have installed biological process water treatment plant that has significantly reduced COD and total Suspended Solids in our effluent by 80%. Additionally this process generate substantial amount of biogas that is used in on-site boilers.
Our plant operates under the Environment Permit issued by the Environment Agency.
Being active part of the local community is written into our mission statement and business practise. We are actively working with Local Organisations on improving the Nechells area. Year on year we are supporting Nechells in Bloom initiative that promotes a partnership approach between the local community in the Nechells neighbourhood and the local businesses.
We are regularly organising Mill Open Days for local residents. The day involves tour of the mill and gives an opportunity to see the paper making process in action.
We also support number of national charities.
