Westwood Community Junior School Pupils Monkey About with Smurfit Kappa March, In aid of Sustainable Forests.
As part of Smurfit Kappa UK’s participation in FSC® Friday, the Forest Stewardship Council’s annual celebration of responsible forestry which takes place this year on Friday the 28th of September, the pupils of Westwood Community Junior School, Maple Grove, March, have been asked to design a poster to represent responsible forestry in recognition of the day. The children will be supplied with cardboard leaves to decorate and design their poster of choice. The First-prize winner will be awarded a free Adoption of a World Wildlife Fund Orang-Utan, one of the world’s most identifiable and endangered forest dwellers. The whole school will then be able to follow the life of the Orang-Utans and their WWF Rangers in the forests of Borneo and Sumatra.
Evidence suggests that fewer than 60,000 Orang-utans exist in the world today. Their habitat destruction and fragmentation are due to land clearance for agriculture, forest fires and illegal and unsustainable logging, which also opens up previously inaccessible areas to poachers.
Along with recovered paper, wood fibres are the most important raw material for paper making and Smurfit Kappa UK, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of paper based packaging solutions is the first UK manufacturer to achieve Chain of Custody (CoC) certification from the Worlds leading Internationally recognised certification agencies, for its 20 UK corrugated plants and 2 Mills.
Forests support up to 1.6 billion of the poorest people in the world. Sixty million indigenous people and countless species of plants and animals are wholly dependent on forests for their lives.
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) was founded in 1993 in response to public concern about deforestation and demand for a trustworthy wood-labelling scheme. The FSC® logo on Smurfit Kappa’s packaging reassures the UK’s public that they are not contributing to the destruction of the world’s forests.
FSC® Friday is a celebration of the world's forests and helps to raise awareness of the importance of managing these forests responsibly and the role that FSC® plays in this.
The Mayor of March, Councillor Jan French, will visit the Smurfit Kappa March manufacturing facility on the day and will be planting a tree and unveiling a plaque to commemorate the first FSC® Friday event to be held at Smurfit Kappa March.
Office staff at the plant will also be entering into the spirit of FSC® Friday by dressing in green and production staff will be entered into a free raffle where they can win one of three trees to take home and plant, to help them encourage their friends and families to support the principles of sustainability.
Mike Fadden, Smurfit Kappa Regional Director East comments, “Responsible management of the world’s resources is vital for the well being of the human race and the animals that co exist alongside us. We are delighted to be able to share our knowledge and understanding for the first time with the next generation of guardians”. He continues, “It’s important to remember that we draw a large number of staff from March and the surrounding area, and we are pleased to be supporting their children in their desire to take responsibility for our forests on a global scale by promoting sustainable manufacturing and responsible Forest Management”.
Smurfit Kappa March produces and converts in excess of 100 million square metres of FSC® certified corrugated board each year from its Hostmoor Avenue Plant, supplying a wide range of the UK’s leading brand names with high-quality post printed packaging
