Case study: Pallet packer

A new solution that increased productivity and reduced accidents on the production line

In the modern business climate where corporate responsibility is increasingly important, materials such as timber, that are traditionally used for heavy-duty export packaging, are no longer regarded as the most appropriate material for the job. Instead, heavy-duty corrugated material is preferred as a safer alternative that can deliver the protection required and also provide sustainable and environmental benefits.

The brief

Smurfit Kappa Van Dam turned its attention to the heavy-duty export market, researching what packaging solutions the majority of companies based in the Netherlands were currently using. On the whole, customers were using pallet packs created from wooden collars and metal hinges, which posed many problems for them. The packaging was hazardous to health due to its method of manufacture and its significant weight.

 Finding the right solution

With no ready alternative available in the marketplace, we created a new solution from heavy-duty corrugated board. Maintaining the flexible functionality of its predecessor, the pack created was strong enough to protect up to 1200kg of product but significantly lighter, making it easier to handle. The result: Increased productivity and fewer accidents on the production line.

Getting results

Patented in Netherlands and Belgium, the Pallet Packer is now being expanded into new markets after huge success in the export sector. The solution has multiple benefits: created from just one recyclable material it replaces the two materials of the previous pack and means no ISPM15 (International Standards for Phytosanitory Measures No.15) treatment is necessary for export. Customers have also seen lower transport costs due to lighter returnable packaging and a significant reduction in time spent on procurement and administration.
