Primary Packaging

Not all boxes are destined to end their life in a supermarket’s backyard. Smurfit Kappa takes pride in supplying a considerable number of customers with primary packs that look after their products up to the moment they are consumed in the home.

Food

Primary packs for food are usually thin – carton board, solid board, or corrugated in E and F flute or composites and tubes. Appearance is all-important: white liners, good graphics in high quality print. These protect products that are easily damaged (eg crisps). They perform well in a freezer (eg snacks) or have excellent barrier and isolation properties (eg pizzas).

Non-food

Non-food items are relatively valuable, slow-moving and undergo complex distribution structures. This makes their packaging of key importance - not only to hold the product, but to protect it throughout distribution and act as an important sales tool. Good packaging emphasises product value, bad packaging destroys consumers’ perception of otherwise excellent products.

Domestic Appliances

The complexity of corrugated packaging is most visible in domestic appliances, from coffee-makers to TV sets, mobile phones to microwaves. A demanding market, but a packaging designer’s delight: the box is expected to protect in all circumstances; to secure the product and all its accessories.
